Graduated from The University of Queensland in 1983 with BDSc(Hons) as a university gold medallist. Began working as a general dentist and undertaking a PhD in immunopathology. After that began restricted practice in special needs dentistry and then specialist private practice in Brisbane. Studied as a postdoc at Uni of Pennyslvania 1989-1990 and then did executive education at Stanford University.
Have held a range of positions at UQ, and gained tenure in 1991 and a personal profesorial chair in 1999. Served as the dean of dentistry 2004-2013.
Teaching spans preventive dentistry, cariology, clinical microbiology/infection control, dental materials and advanced technologies. Have a long term research interest in microbial aspects of oral diseases and in agents and technologies which can deal with the challenges of complex microbial films both inside and on the surface of teeth and dental implants.
Research work has attracted over 8500 cites. Inventor of 7 families of patents. Major contributor to infection control education nationally and internationally, especially in Oceania and SE Asian regions. Senior adviser to Australian state and national government bodies on dental infection control. Author of the ADA Infection Control Guidelines and related resources.
