Rethinking Routine: A Patient-Specific Approach to Biofilm Management

Routines create consistency in clinical practice, but patient care can be compromised when routine begins to dictate treatment decisions instead of current clinical findings. This evidence-based course challenges dental professionals to move beyond the "routine prophy" mindset and evaluate each patient's oral and systemic health needs at every visit.
Participants will explore the relationship between biofilm, inflammation, and the oral-systemic connection, while examining how comprehensive assessment findings help determine the most appropriate treatment pathway. The course emphasizes the importance of individualized care planning driven by risk assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based decision-making.
The course will also examine how modern biofilm-management strategies, including therapeutic air polishing, power instrumentation, hand instrumentation, and adjunctive therapies, can be individualized based on the patient's current condition. By aligning assessment, diagnosis, treatment, documentation, and coding, clinicians can provide the right care at the right time while improving patient outcomes, clinical efficiency, and hygiene-department productivity.
